Hiking in Kelso Conservation Area
Kelso Conservation Area has different types of hiking trails – from easy for beginners, to moderately difficult for the experienced hikers. The conservation area is an ideal place for hiking and mountain biking in the summer, and transforms into a nice ski resort during winter. One moderately-difficult trail to hike is the Niagara escarpment trail, where you will negotiate steep (about 25 to 30 degrees slope) and curved dirt roads after leaving the trail head at the locker room area. While hiking this trail, be on the lookout for large tree roots on the ground. A pair of good mid-cut hiking shoes will help in keeping your ankles from getting sprained. Pack water and trail mix bars during your hike. Beautiful view at top of the cliff near the ski ride tower/station. Be on the lookout for mountain bikers while hiking; a lot of trails in Kelso are shared among hikers and cyclists. Not a good idea to wear headphones while hiking. Kelso Lake is also a good place for leisure kayaking and canoeing. There is a large picnic area at the south side of the lake, good for spending the weekend afternoons with the family. The picnic area can also accommodate large groups.
