No Siesta at Piazza Della Signoria

Visiting Florence? Check this out - a big open area with magnificent Renaissance artworks!

Not to be missed when visiting Florence. Still considered as the political center of the city of Florence, the piazza is easily accessible from the two main train stations, Firenze Santa Maria Novella on the west and Firenze Campo Di Marte on the east, and from across the Arno River on the south.

We spent about half a day at Piazza della Signoria marvelling at the sculptures of Neptune, the Statua Equestre di Cosimo and the sculptures at the Loggia dei Lanzi (had a field day taking pictures here), and did not notice the hours passing by. This is a spacious piazza with cafes and ristorantes all around.

| The giant turtle sculpture (by Jan Fabre) in the middle of the piazza is a recent addition.

We also visited the Palazzo Vecchio nearby which was also beautiful and rich in history, before we headed into the Uffizi Gallery (you will not want to miss this gallery!).

Other major tourist attractions are also a short walking distance from the piazza - the Mercato de Porcellino and Ponte Vecchio (two of the main shopping areas in Florence), the Basilica di Santa Croce di Firenze to the east and the Piazzale Michelangelo across the Arno River to the south.

This is one place where you do not rush strolling around, as taking in the sceneries and views is exhilarating; not to mention the shopping in between.
